Text Box: History of Labradoodles When you hear the word “Labradoodle” you most likely think “Designer Dog.” And, although this remarkable breed has become one of the “It Dogs,” there is far more to the breed than just being fashionable or trendy!! Unlike “breeds of the moment,” years of research and a great deal of thought have gone into perfecting the Labradoodle breed. Although, the Labradoodle is one of the most breathtaking dogs you’ll ever see, beauty was not the original motivation for combining the Labrador and Poodle. In the early 80’s Wally Conron of Royal Guide Dogs in Victoria, Australia first began crossing the Labrador with the Standard Poodle after receiving a request for a guide dog that would be hypo-allergenic. Of the 31 Labradoodles born at Royal Guide Dogs, an astounding 29 were successfully trained and placed as guide dogs. Popularity of the Labradoodle quickly caught on and the rest is history. Unlike other popular mixed breeds or hybrids the Labradoodle was born through necessity rather than on a whim. Also, unlike others, the Labradoodle combines two pure breds that have very similar dispositions and abilities. Both breeds are very athletic, love the water, known for their gentle nature and are incredibly smart. Both breeds have also been quite successful as service and therapy dogs because of their willingness to please and because of their superior intelligence. With the increased awareness of the remarkable breed, hopefully it will not be long before the Labradoodle receives the recognition it deserves and be considered more than just a “Designer Dog.”
